NEWAL History

Records indicate sixteen clerks of the National Association of Post Office Clerks attended the Clerk-Carrier Convention in 1911. Only one of our retired clerks knew the clerks personally. William Danz, Lois Nejedlo, James Clushman, Ben Wilson, Fred Nejedlo, Emily Robinson, Jules Cauwenberg, Jules Frisque, Albert Hart, M.C. Riley, Fred Danz, Walter Mott, Anton Jarstad and Chas Weiber were the clerks attending the Convention. The business session for the convention began at (clerk and carrier) 9:30 A.M.  At 10:30 a boat ride on the Steamer Denessen. The next business session was held at 1:30 and lasted until 4:00 P.M.

The convention program is all the record we have of any union activity in Green Bay. It was 22 years later that Green Bay received it's Charter.

On August 1, 1933, the National Federation of Post Office Clerks, granted Charter 2247 to the Clerks of the Green Bay Post Office.

This meeting was held at the Green Bay Gun Club at Peaks Lake.

In attendance were National President Leo E. George, Washington D.C., Stanley Weinrich, State Secretary, Milwaukee, Ed Hadler, Installing, Milwaukee, Roy Daentl, Madison. Walter Ladrow was elected President, Edward Rentmeister as Secretary and Alex Castonia the Treasurer. This slate of officers served through 1934.

The Great Postal Strike occured 1970. The Local voted not to report to the Post Office as long as Green Bay Letter Carriers were on strike. Local members will not cross a Letter Carrier picket line.

The new Postal Service was born, or hatched in 1971. The First National Agreement of the American Postal Workers Union was signed on July 20. Local 2247, Local N.P.U. and Special Delivery finally merged. In 1981 we became known as the Northeastern Wisconsin Area Local expanding our representation from Green Bay to Northeastern Wisconsin.
